The story tells of the king named Bukuku, who rules over the Batembuzi. A prophet earned King Bukuku that his daughter Nyina Mwiru, would give birth to a son named Ndahura, who would one day become a king and then take over his throne. To prevent this prophecy from coming true, the furious King Bukuku tried to make his beautiful daughter undesirable to any man. He ordered her breasts to be cut off and then thrown into the cave, and then imprisoned her there. Despite his cruel efforts, Nyina Mwiru become pregnant by King Isaza (another king from the Batembuzi dynasty) and gave birth to a son Ndahura, right there in the cave. Since Nyina Mwiru had no breasts, the legend says that the walls of the cave miraculously grew many breast-like formations, dripping with a milky, calcium-rich substance to feed baby Ndahura. Ndahura indeed grew up to become a king, fulfilling the prophecy. Because of this powerful story, the dripping stalactites in the cave are believed by the locals to the ‘’breasts of Nyina Mwiru’’, continuously flowing with milk, giving the caves their unique and then meaningful name. This legend is not just a tale, it’s a strong part of the local culture, teaching lessons about respecting elders and the power of the destiny.
